Spree 2018 Imaginarium

Summer Spree at the Community Arts Center is the perfect place for kids to have fun, be creative, and work alongside experienced teaching artists.  Summer Spree has been around for a long time— more than 30 years—so we know what kids, parents and teens want in a summer program.  Our classes are designed to bring out the best in everyone.  This year, campers will explore the theme Imaginarium. This summer, our young artists will devote their time with us to cultivating their imagination. Campers will find artistic inspiration by exploring both the manufactured and natural worlds, as well as the world of their own creative mind. There are endless possibilities for discovery and we look forward to exploring the Imaginarium with you!!!

In addition to the regularly scheduled morning activities, each of our five sessions features special extras for all campers. Each session, different visitors are eager to inspire young artists. These projects provide special opportunities to work alongside professional working artists and master gardeners on projects designed especially for Summer Spree!

IMAGINARIUM June 25 through August 17

Magic Mornings ~9:00AM 12:00PM Monday – Friday  (ages 4-11)

Afternoon Adventures ~ 1:00PM – 4:00PM Monday – Friday (ages 4-11)

Session 1: June 26 to 30  Magic Morning $180M/$195NM Artist and CAC Summer Fellow, Jenny Graham-Hougah: Imagine You and Me at the CAC is a week long collaborative project created by Spree Campers and Summer Fellow Jenny Graham-Hougah. Students work collaboratively to create a diorama of a portion of the Community Art Center and also work individually to paint self-portraits. Through the creation of the CAC diorama, portrait painting and group shares, students examine the idea that people in portrait paintings are in a space all their own. Students envision the environment surrounding the figures in the portrait paintings by Jenny Graham-Hougah on display in the Duke Gallery. Students discuss their ideas with each other and the group and gain hands-on experience creating portraits of themselves with the CAC as a backdrop. Group and individual demonstrations help students see common materials as vehicles to their own vision. A team-work atmosphere encourages free exchange of ideas. Collaborative diorama of the CAC and student created self-portraits will be hung in the exhibit when complete. – Afternoon Adventures $180M/$195NM  Children will have fun with Ceramics, Gardening, Songwriting & Storytelling, Yard Games & Movement.

Gardening Each week we will get a chance to add to the lovely Community Arts Center children’s garden.  Campers will work on individual or group projects and play, build and plant and to add to our imaginary world.

Yard Games and other Movement! We like to rev things up a bit in the afternoons, so we’ll play outdoor games and explore other energetic activities in the big yard that combine art with physical education.
