Artist’s Statement: The work I create is inspired by the natural processes of growth, erosion, and transformation. Through the carving and shaping of clay I aim to echo the patterns and shapes found in weathered rock, coral, and seedpods. Many of my pieces can be considered vessels, functional pottery meant to hold and serve, thus connecting the rituals of daily life to the enduring cycles of nature. These forms are mostly crafted from locally sourced clay, then throw on the wheel to be altered and shaped by hand.
The intentional marks of making become another natural force, hands shaping clay just as the wind, water, and time shape the earth. Each functional sculpture is therefore a mediation on creation itself, connecting their artistry to the natural forces that originally inspired them.
Marina Momboisse is a ceramic artist based in Philadelphia. She teaches a surface design class here at the Community Arts Center and sells her work locally. She studied photography at Parsons School of Design, establishing a strong foundation of arts education and visual literacy. She found her way to ceramics a few years later and credits her success in the medium to the teachers and community at the CAC, starting as a student then quickly working as a kiln tech to finally teaching, this exhibition is a culmination of her journey here thus far.
