Artists Bio and Statement:

Joe Tenerelli started drawing political illustrations when he worked on The Temple News
over 50 years ago. That’s where he discovered the rapidograph, a technical pen that he
uses to this day. Graduating with a degree in journalism, he worked as a journalist but soon
found that graphic design and illustration were what inspired him. As a self-taught artist,
his cross hatching style was inspired by the many excellent Op-Ed page illustrators ,
especially from the New York Times and Washington Post. That’s where the best political
cartoonists could be found. He eventually worked as a regular contributor to the
Philadelphia Inquirer’s Op-Ed page for several years. His background as a journalist was a
huge asset at quickly translating words to illustrations. His work, especially in black and
white, is very detailed. Most of Joe’s work combines ink and watercolors, and he has
illustrated magazine and newspaper articles for CIGNA, The Philadelphia Lawyer
magazine, Temple University’s alumni magazine, Drexel University, Philadelphia Retina
Endowment Fund, and many others.
Joe’s artwork has appeared in several galleries. His work can also be found on his
Instagram account at https://www.instagram.com/tenerellijoe/.
