Artist Statement
Pushing The Boundaries
With The Raku Process and Varied Techniques, I hope to Inspire my Students/ Fellow Artists to explore and expand the boundaries of Clay. As Ceramic Artists , we learn by pushing the boundaries of each technique, clay body, and type of firing. Working by hand, Slab built, coiling and pinching, pieces evolve. The shapes created, the volume, the inner forms/inner space create harmony with the Glazed and Smoked Raku Surfaces. The Immediacy of the Raku Firing, (about one hour) is a communal effort, creating a cohesive feeling in class. We work together, creating and firing, for exciting results!
Artist Bio
Born in Pennsylvania, my family moved to Mexico City when I was five. We lived there until I was twelve. I went to the American School where classes were held in Spanish and English. We returned to US , to the New York City Area. After high school, I travelled and spent a year at Peters Valley Crafts Community , working for the community and apprenticing to various artists. I was incredibly drawn to fiber arts. Two years of Art School at Ridge wood School of Art, New Jersey. Exhibited fiber work nationally, American Craft Council Shows. Worked as designer of clothing/ sweaters in NYC for 14 years Maintained a painting studio in NYC for 10 years, exhibiting in Cooperative galleries in NYC and nationally. After Marrying and Moving to Pennsylvania, I took up ceramic work, taking classes at local art centers. I currently teach Hand-Building and Raku and Alternative Firing at Community Arts Center, Wallingford . I also teach Private Ceramic and Mixed Media and Encaustic workshops in my studio in Wyndmoor.
